IF I HEAR ONE MORE too-earnest discourse on the “Sacred Feminine,” I’m going to pull out my Sacred Masculine.

What is “Sacred Feminine?”
In the 1960s, some progressive religious people made the bold step in realizing that God has no phallus. However, rather than completing the leap to non-anthropomorphism they, like Aristotle, assumed the excluded middle — that if God has no phallus, She must be a girl.
There’s a lot more in there about oppressive patriarchies, the indwelling feminine voice and something called “herstory.” While I am a tolerant man, too-earnestness of anything makes me itch. Wouldn’t we think more clearly if we just ditched the images? “Beware of Imitations.”
(The main thing about this post is that it’s just exactly what I felt like saying yesterday morning to my friend Sputnik. Unfortunately, he’s dead. But he would have grinned. Hugely. Maybe someone else will too.)
Kathryn, he was reacting to my mention of a program at SSU called “The Evolution of the Image of the Sacred Feminine.” This is its description:
“If we believe, as Jung did, that the whole history of the human race is in some ways always alive in the psyche, we can reclaim images of the Sacred Feminine, which is an eternal archetype. She has shown herself to us from the earliest times of our civilization in cave paintings and primitive sculptures, in the great mythologies, and she appears in many guises in our present cultures. She is part of the fabric of our very being. In this slide lecture we will look at images of the Sacred Feminine throughout recorded history from Paleolithic times to the present, with special emphasis on the findings of Marija Gimbutas from the Neolithic period, to remind us of how she is alive within each of us today.”
Actually, my reaction was more like this:
“If we believe, as Jung did, that the whole history of the human race is in some ways always alive in the psyche…”
“DUH. WHERE THE HELL ELSE IS IT GOING TO LIVE?”
“… we can reclaim images of the Sacred Feminine, which is an eternal archetype.”
“YOU CAN RECLAIM ANY GHAWD DAMN THING YOU WANT. THAT’S WHY IT’S CALLED THE COLLECTIVE %$#@!ING UNCONSCIOUS.”
I’m a real hoot on the weekends.
